Students Whose First Language Is Not English

Lack of English skills will not be a barrier to admission or participation. We take appropriate measures to assess each student's ability to participate and benefit through readiness assessment and counseling. The assessment will ensure more accurate placement in appropriate course levels and help to determine whether strengthening English language skills is necessary to maximize the student's academic success. Based on the readiness assessment and counseling, students are then provided with campus services or a referral to community services to be better prepared for successful participation. Normandale offers an excellent program through the Department of English called English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to help students prepare for the many English language demands of their future academic career. The Course Readiness Assessment will place the student in the correct level of the program - the level where the student will be most successful.
